I’m not a detective (see the fact that I failed to detect a barista’s straightness). But last night I got a message from someone who was more than a little suspicious. The message was fine- cute, funny, all that. But then I looked at the person’s profile (fyi, I rate the picture a 7.6). On their profile, they had some interesting…interests…They were all mine! Now, I haven’t been on Singlesnet long, but as your gay dating impresario, I’ll tell you one thing- the odds are pretty slim that this guy would have THE EXACT SAME INTERESTS as me. I’ve created a little table for you, my reading public. He’s in Italics and I’m in normal type because I’m the normal one.

I love listening to opera in my room while drinking Irish Creme. If you’re like me, you’d enjoy it in the bath, too.

So this is where it gets MC Escher level sketchy. On mine, I have: “I like conducting La Boheme in my living room while sipping on a drink I can’t pronounce. Occasionally, I’ll slosh bathwater out of the tub at the same time.”

Now, aside from the fact that my description is better (naturally!), isn’t it a little weird that we have basically the same interests? Something tells me this 7.6er saw my profile, copied it, then message me. He needs some profile writing tips! Or he needs to get a life….

I’d be flattered if it weren’t for the fact that…ok, I guess I’m flattered. But the trick won’t work.

I’m going to write him one word.

The Verdict On Dating In Public

The answer is yes! I’ll tell it to you the same way I told my friend last night (as we dined at La Palma- absolutely delicious, but Mexican food never prepares you for dating). Anyway, you may remember that yesterday I was trying to decide if online dating in public was fantastic or sketchtastic. In the meantime, a Beautiful Bearded Barista (B3) was walking around, daring to catch me. So guess what happened?I decided to go ahead and log on, even if I was risking that B3 would see me. So I go onto Singlesnet and I was updating something in my profile (interests: B3), when none other than B3 himself stares over my shoulder.

“Hey, are you on Singlesnet?” he asks me.

“Yes, I am.” At that point, I was about thirty seconds away from literally screaming.

“Cool. I just joined.”

“Oh, really?”

“Yeah. Totally.”

“How’s it gone so far?”

He stroked his stubble a little and I wished I was his hand. Or the stubble.

“It’s ok. But I haven’t met the right girl yet.”

Girl! Damn! I listened to B3 a little longer, thinking that maybe when he’d said “girl” he meant to say “skinny african american gay man who likes Mexican food at La Palma”. But he never fixed himself. So fate didn’t squirm its way into my dating- yet. I did send some interesting messages out, at least, to make up for my B3 rejection…sigh.
