I didn’t know what to do or how to do it.

Do you know how I responded?

I kept my heels on.

After a long day, it can be incredibly hard to keep your heels on your feet.

But sometimes, it’s all that matters.

I don’t know the answer myself.

That’s how I feel tonight in New York. Nobody can get in my way, can they? I can just feel it, you know?

For example- how much time to you really need to take to get to know a person? Is a first impression something that’s valid? Or is it just a hint at the truth.

Politics.

Ugh!!!! I hate it…Why does it matter who you voted for when it comes to who you date? I mean, I know that politics can reflect how you look at the world. But politics isn’t everything!

If it is, I think I might be a little sad.

I’m more than a tax perspective or healthcare opinion. I’m a woman!

Oddly enough, I think one of the things is that a date is less predictable than a bar. Sure, if I’m sloshed, then a bar can give me some totally unanticipated fun. But otherwise, I know pretty much what will happen. I’ll sit at the bar, talk to the bartender, and then go home. La Di Da.

But a date! Oh a date! There’s so much that you can do on a date, and you’re guaranteed that something will happen. Sure, it isn’t all good. Sometimes, you’ll endure awkward exchanges, and other times you’ll enjoy perfect ones. But no matter what, something new will happen. And that makes it all worthwhile.

He’d given me terrible directions that were much more vague than I realized. Once I got off the train, I had no idea where to go. Plus, he wouldn’t answer his phone when I called! Who does that? So I wandered around just looking for the guy for a while. That didn’t work.

Eventually, I stopped at a cafe and spent the rest of my morning there. Why don’t guys realize that phones are important, useful tools? Ah well.

I think that it’s because all the i-bankers, traders, and other assorted finance gurus are looking for something to do since they lost their jobs! They are still loaded, but they have 24 hours to fill every day (and they are used to filling 16 of those hours with work.

My evidence? Last week, I was contacted by a man named Chad who likes boating, Scarface, and “Tha club.”

If that doesn’t prove my case, I don’t know what does!

I’ve refreshed my online dating profile with new vigor. It’s good to have a thing called hope- especially when it comes to getting a date.

A cat! Yes, I know it’s a predictable get up. But I’m like any girl, I love to get dressed up and, yes, feel pretty. So I’m going to check out all the crazy parades and the parties.

But I couldn’t help but thinking: Is Halloween really that different? I live in a city where everybody is always dressed up, looking perfect, and walking alone.

On Halloween, everybody wears a mask.

But don’t they always?

People think that spring is romantic, but fall is my favorite month. You trade your summer dress for a jacket and instead of feeling the humidity, you watch leaves fall from the trees. That’s New York in fall. 

Here’s the corny part- it makes me think of an amazing scene in “Music and Lyrics.” OK, an amazing song. I plan to spend the next few days listening to this one on my iPod and, hopefully, living it out too.

The other day, I was sitting at the office and I get a call on my phone. My work phone. The receptionist tells me who it is- it’s him. My graphic designer.

How long do you have to know somebody before they can call you at ork? Is there a rule? Should they really be using that phone number? How do they know you on’t get in trouble for talking to them for a minute, let alone the ten that he and I talked?

I’m not afraid of commitment, but I am afraid of getting fired. But maybe I’m overreacting. After all, when the receptionist told me that it was him on the other end of the line, I still answered.

This time we went to a gallery part he’d been invited to. Neither of us knew anyone, so we watched the waitress as she spiraled around us, holding a piece of cheese. He shrugged.

“Are you having fun?”

“Sure.”

“Let’s go.”

He wasn’t nervous. We went down the street to a Chinese place that was buried inside an alleyway. We got our cartons of MSG and sat in the overlit corner of the room. At one point I noticed that we’d been fencing with our chopsticks.

“They’ll get tangled,” I said.

“They’re chopsticks.” He laughed. “They can’t get tangled.”

We realized it was already midnight. I had an early morning the next day, and since he lives in Brooklyn, we took different subways.

But the chopsticks are in my purse.
